Simeon Bar-Isaac - Publications

Simeon Bar-Isaac - Biography

Born in Mainz, Germany. An important scholar of his time. As a paytan he composed yozerot, kerovot, selihot, hymns, and rashuyyot le-hatanim. It is probable that he sang his piyutim himself. His piyutim bare traces of the language found in early piyutim, and they are marked by the pain of the persecutions of the Jews in Bar-Isaacs' lifetime.

Dudu Barak - Biography

Dudu Barak is a writer of Israeli folk songs. He was born in Jerusalem in 1948 and grew up in Rehavia Neighborhood. As a child, he took part in the "Pinat Hayeled," choir, which sang on the radio. Through the choir, Barak got to know the poets Leah Goldberg, Miram Yalan Shtekelis, Anda Amir and Bilha Yafe who used to come to the studio.

Founder and first editor of the Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Kantoren-Zeitung (1881-1898). Together with Isidor Lowit, published a collection of arrangements of Turco-Sephardic melodies (Schir-Hakawod ).

Born in Bingen, Germany. Taken to Palestine in 1936. Received a PhD in Musicology at the University of Zurich, and later a earned a librarian's degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Directed the music department in the National Library (1964-1974). Was a lecturer in the Musicology department of the Hebrew University, researcher of the Jewish Music Research Center, and co-editor of Yuval-Studiesof Jewish Music Vol. 1-5.

Jacob Beimel - Biography

Born in Parichi, Belarus. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1915. Worked as cantor and conductor in Europe (Berlin and Copenhagen) and later in the U.S. (New York and Philadelphia). Has written many articles concerning Jewish music. Founded the Journal, Jewish Music, in which he published a few of his own compositions and adaptations (synagogue music, folk songs, and Hassidic melodies).
