Dr. Susana (Shoshana) Weich-Shahak, a senior scholar at the Jewish Music Research Centre, was recently awarded the Órder del Mérito Civil of Spain, an order establish in 1929, which is, along with the Royal Order of Isabel the Catholic, one of the two orders granted by the Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Order of Civil Merit is granted to Spanish or foreign citizens who have performed civil merits, such as services relevant to the state or extraordinary work in any field of public interest. Dr. Weich-Shahak was given the award at a special ceremony that took place at the Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv on November 22, 2016.
The JMRC is proud to count among our ranks Dr. Susana Weich-Shahak, who has been an integral part of our efforts for several decades. One of the most distinguished researchers of Sephardic music and poetry, Dr. Weich-Shahak’s prolific field collection, carried out under the aegis of the JMRC and housed at the Sound Archives of the Israel National Library, is a treasure that will continue to nourish generations of scholars and artists interested in Judeo-Spanish song and its historical and cultural context. Her seminal publications, several of which were released by the JMRC, offer a wide perspective of the content and evolution of this repertoire. We wish Shoshana many more years of academic and personal achievements.
