Shofeit Kol Ha'aretz (Venice)

Leo Levi

A seliḥah (supplication) with the acrostic Shelomo, referring to God as the "Judge over the entire Earth." Originally part of the Sephardi rite, it was adopted by the Tedesco ritual for Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and by the Italian ritual for Rosh Hashanah. This Venetian Ashkenazi version shows contacts with the Shofet melody transcribed by Benedetto Marcello. The modal structure of the Ashkenazi tradition is abandoned here in favor of a more tonal (or "Western") rendition.
