9. Pan-Hasidic niggun of devequt

Avraham Weingarten

Avraham Weingarten, Jerusalem, 8 January 1967.

An early niggun of devequt, probably Pan-Hasidic. Weingarten heard it from his grandfather, R. Yaakov Eisenbach (1880-1960; known as "Yankl Pester''), who was ba'al-tefillah of the Great Synagogue in the Batei Ungarn neighborhood ("Der ungarisher shut") in Jerusalem. The niggun is also sung by other Hasidic communities. The Hasidim of the Toledot Aharon community, founded in the 20th century by R. Aharon Roth (known as "Reb Arele''), sing it at the Friday night Sabbath meal to the words of the Sabbath hymn "Kol meqaddesh shevi'i." The fact that it is also sung by the Sanz Hasidim suggests that it might have originated among the Blozhov (Blezhovo) Hasidim. Mitnaggedim (non-Hasidic /haredi communities) used to sing an abbreviated version of this niggun at the Sabbath morning meal, with the words of the table hymn "Barukh el 'elyon." In National-Religious circles and Conservative synagogues the same version is sung to the words of the piyyut "Yedid nefesh" just before the Sabbath Inauguration Service.
