15. Dance niggun of Karlin Hasidim

Avraham Weingarten

Avraham Weingarten, Jerusalem, 6 February 1967.

An early dance niggun that the Karlin Hasidim used to sing without words on Simhat Torah and other occasions. The Karliner Rebbe, R. Avraham Elimelekh Perlov (1892- 1942), visited the Land of Israel in 1925, 1928, 1933 and 1939. After one of those visits, when he left to return home, the Hasidim fit a Yiddish message of farewell and blessing for this tune: "Be healthy, my dearest Rebbe, may God help us to meet again." This wish was never fulfilled, since the Rebbe perished in the Holocaust. Since then the niggun has been known as "Farewell niggun."
