Annotations:

Following David Avisar’s open call of May 23, 1937 (see: “Ezra Aharon [“Azuri”]: A Documentation 1”), members of the Association for Oriental Hebrew Song hosted a series of events and receptions in an attempt to enlarge its membership and strengthen the public support for Ezra Aharon. On these occasions Azuri spoke and played the ‘ud, usually introduced by Avisar who in this case server also as translator. This event reported here was hosted by the prominent Auster family. Julia Auster of Iraqi Jewish descend was a member of the board of the Association. The presence of the Egyptian consul in Jerusalem on this occasion and his willingness to organize a reception in honor of Ezra stands out for its political significance. Also remarkable is the conversation about the diffusion of Oriental music was carried out by senior members of the Ashkenazi Jewish political and educational establishment, all of whom were immigrants from Europe.

English Translation

The aficionados of Oriental Hebrew Music gathered this week at the family home of D[aniel] Auster’s [1893-1963], deputy major of Jerusalem. Present were: I[tzhak] Ben Zvi, Head of the National Council, Y. Epstein from the [Jewish] Agency, Dr. [Eliezer] Riger from the Education Department, the Egyptian Consul, members of the District Court and more. D[avid] Avisar opened with a short speech about types of Oriental Music. He transmitted the content of the songs in the Arabic language, and Mr. Ezra Aharon played examples from a selection of his compositions that were greeted with a nice applause.

Over set-up tables, some proposals were heard regarding the diffusion of Oriental music. In the conversation participated Y. Ben Zvi, Dr. Riger and Dr. [Immanuel] Olsvanger.

The Egyptian Consul [Ali Abu al‑Gheit Bey], who organized [sic!, probably means “from the country that organized”] in the year 1932 the musical competition of the East in Cairo, in which Ezra Aharon won the first prize, expressed his willingness to organize a party in honor of Mr. Ezra.

The judge Mr. M. Valero took upon himself to organize in the coming days a meeting of aficionados of Oriental music.
